I thought
Malcolm X, Benjamin Franklin, and Mike Rose all had great narrative essays. All
three of them did a good job at getting the point of their story across.
I think my
favorite story was Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average.” I think he did a good
job at describing the people in his story. I was able to visualize what his teachers
and some of his classmates looked like. I was also able to now what some of the
guys Mike Rose went to school with were like. One of Mike Rose’s teachers that I was able to visualize was his Spanish teacher. Rose describes him as, “a tiny man, slight, five foot six at the most, soft spoken and delicate.” He also states, “He was as prepared for it (his rowdy class) as a doily maker at a hammer throw.” I imagine his teacher being a quiet man who isn’t very good at keeping his students on track or under control.
Mike Rose describes one of his classmates named Dave Snyder as, “a sprinter and halfback of true quality.” He also says, “he was welcome in any clique.” I get the image that Dave Snyder does track and is a popular guy who gets a long with everyone.
