Education in America

Getting an education is important for everyone. Without getting an education you wont get a good paying job such as being a lawyer, a teacher, or anything in the medical field. In my opinion, education in America needs to improve. I believe education is failing because of the way teachers are teaching, schooling is test based, the cost of going to a university is too expensive for many families, and students feel more pressure socially.

The way teachers teach have an effect on their students learning. Each teacher has a different style of teaching. They don’t teach for all students to understand. Some students are able to learn just by listening while others are visual learners. I think if all teachers did both ways of teaching, more students  would learn more because they would pay more attention and actually be able to understand what is being taught. Also, some classes have too many students for one teacher. If the class size is smaller, the teacher has more of a chance to work one on one with their students. They would also be able to help them more with their learning needs.

A students education is based off of a state test. The tests do not take into consideration the learning differences and abilities. For example, not everyone is at the same math level when it is time to take the math portion of the state test, but they all have to take the same test anyway. I don’t think it is fair that someone who isn’t so great at math and is in a low math class in high school has to take the same math test as someone who is a lot better at it. I think there should be different tests for each math level.

Going to a university is really expensive especially if you want to go to one out of state. There are many different things you have to pay for. If you’re going out of state you have to pay for the out of state tuition, you also have to pay for text books, dorm, and many students have a meal plan. A lot of families can’t afford to pay for it all. Financial aid is one good thing our country has. Financial aid helps pay for some of the expenses but not all. I think if it didn’t cost so much, more people would go on to further their education after high school.

Students feel like they need to socially fit in with everyone else. All schools have all the different kinds of cliques. People think if they don’t have nice things or do some of the things others do that they wont fit in. I think some people worry too much about fitting in with everyone else and don’t focus enough on learning. I also think people enjoy texting and talking with their friends during class more than paying attention which is why some students fall behind in class or do bad on assignments.

Education in America is doing poorly for many reasons. Some students are unable to pay attention and learn because of the way their teacher is teaching. Not all students have the same amount of knowledge causing them to fail the standardized state testing. There are people who don’t make enough money to pay for college and they don’t get enough help from financial aid. Also, some students care more about going to school to socialize with their friends than to pay attention and learn. There are many students who drop out of school causing them to be unemployed or having low paying jobs. I think the education here needs improvement.

  1. The current practice of gauging students' abilities based on their standardized test scores is definitely detrimental to their education, especially since a large portion of a school's budget is decided by the average score on the states standardized tests. Now, a schools administration is more concerned about their students doing well on a standardized test than on their students' actually understanding of course material.
