How are the two schools different

In the movies Stand and Deliver and Dead Poets Society, the schools are very different. In Stand and Deliver, Garfield High School's teacjers arn't well educated in the subjects they teach. For instance, Mr. Escalante was suppose to teach computer science but ended up teaching math. The students here feel more pressure socially to fit in with their classmates. If they are smart or spend time studying they would be considered an outcast. Unlike in Dead Poets Society, the students at Welton feel more pressure to be successful and to please their parents. At Garfield High the teachers didn't expect much from their students so they didn't take school seriously because it wouldn't effect them. At Welton, since it is a boarding school the students have high expectations. Their parents are spending a lot of money for them to be there so they feel they need to do really well. Also, if they act up they could get kicked out of the school and that would really let their parents down because they expect for them to graduate and become a doctor, lawyer, or something really successful like that. At the end of Stand and Deliver the students were actually interested in school and wanted to do good on their AP calculus exams while in Dead Poets Society the students want to do more activities that don't have to do with learning.

Comparing Mr. Escalante and Mr. Macfarland

There are many, many teachers in this world. Not all of them are the same because some have different teaching styles, some have more knowledge on the subject they teach, and some seem to show that they actually care about their students' education. I think Mr. Escalante and Mr. Macfarland are similar teachers. Both of these teachers seem to actually care about their students education and believes in their students. For instance, Mr. Escalante believed his students could pass the AP calculus exam and he fought to get them the second chance to retake it. He also went to talk to one of his students' parents to talk to them about letting her continue going to school because he believed she was a smart girl and could go off to college after high school. Mr. Macfarland believed in Mike Rose. He knew Rose was smart enough to get into college even when Rose didn't think he'd be able to. Mr. Macfarland encouraged Rose and helped him get into college. Another way these teachers are similar is they would both quiz their students and actually give them a lot of work to do. I think it's great when a teacher believes in you and encourages you. I've had a math teacher in high school who believed I was able to pass my math classes and even the state test. I liked that even when I wasn't in her class anymore she would still check up on how I was doing in my new math classes the following years. I knew I was able to go to her if I ever needed help with math and that's a great feeling to have.

Part 2 of Stand and Deliver

In my opinion Mr. Escalante was a good teacher. He spent a lot of time with this group of high schoolers because he believed in them. He knew they could pass the AP calculus exam if they really tried. Although, I don't think a teacher would actually spend that much time with their students. I think Mr. Escalante did a great job at personally getting to know his students so he could relate to them and show them that he cares and believes in them. I don't think this group of students have had a teacher believe in them as much as Mr. Escalante did. I think that helped encourage and motivate them to actually pay attention and learn. In my opinion, a good teacher is someone who knows the subject they are teaching well and can make learning fun and interesting. Mr. Escalante was suppose to teach a computer science class but instead had to teach math and I think he did a good job at it even if he didn't know as much about math as he did about computer science. I also think he proved to his students that he believed in them by fighting to get answers for why they think the students cheated on the AP calculus exam. Also by getting them to allow the students to retake the exam to prove that they didn't cheat. I think these students learned from Mr. Escalante that if you try really hard at something you can succeed and not to give up.

Part 1 of Stand and Deliver

So far I think Stand and Deliver is a decent movie. Although some of the things Mr. Escalante does and says does not seem too realistic. I think it is great that he actually wants to teach this group of high schoolers and is putting a lot of effort into it. It almost seems unbelievable that his students went from knowing seventh grade math to learning calculus in two years. That really shows the effort that Mr. Escalante is putting towards his students education. I think it is great that he is taking the time to teach his students before and after school, during the weekends, and during the summer for very little pay. Since he is spending so much time teaching, he's not spending much time with his family anymore. I believe his family should be one of his top priorities. I also think he has a great sense of humor. Although, some of the things he says is kind of rude and shouldn't be said by a teacher. For example, he mentioned something as a joke about one of his female students in front of the whole class, but he shouldn't have said it because it was personal. Mr. Escalante also does a good job at trying to get to know his students personally and can relate to them because of it.

What I value in a teacher

I think teachers are important. Without them I don't think people would know as much as they do. Although, I think teachers need to actually know about the subject they are teaching in order to do a good job at helping others learn. I value my teachers who know a lot about the subject they teach. I say this because I personally have a class that is a little bit difficult for me and I think it is because of the teacher now knowing too much about the work she is teaching. In class this teacher goes over our assignments with us but a lot of the time she forgot or doesn't know how to do the problem so other students in the class have to tell her how. I have noticed the people in my class ask other classmates for help more than they ask the teacher. I also do the same. This one particular class has made me realize I really value my teachers who are well educated on their subjects that they teach and are able to actually answer my questions and help me learn.

Audre Lorde

There are many teachers in the world. Not all of them are the same. All teachers are different because they don't all teach the same way. Also, some are nicer than others. To me it seemed like Audre Lorde had encountered some mean teachers.
Audre Lorde showed her readers what the teachers she had encountered were like by telling stories from when she was in their class. The stories she had made the teachers sound like they were a bit mean. For example, Audre Lorde's sight-conversation kindergarten teacher told Lorde she was going to tell her mother about her not following directions in class. She was suppose to write the first letter of her name but she wrote her whole name instead. I think her teacher could have been a bit nicer about it. She didn't need to threaten her with telling her mother. All she was doing was showing off that she knew how to write her name already. I know that following directions is important, maybe her teacher could have been polite and remind her of what the directions were.
Another encounter with a teacher Lorde had was with Sister Mary of Perpetual Help. This teacher would separate her class into good and bad groups. She would put Lorde in the bad group for not knowing her numbers. It didn't seem like Sister MPH would help her learn numbers, but instead punish her by placing her in the bad group.

Final Education Narrative

Ever since I was a little girl I have been around dirt bikes and quads. I would spend most of my weekends at a few different race tracks. If I wasn’t at a public race track then I was hanging out at a family friend's personal track that they had on their property. The people I spent most of my time with when I was younger were all into riding dirt bikes and quads. I had been asked countless times throughout the years about whether or not I wanted to learn. I never wanted to. I thought getting dirty was disgusting and I only wanted to play with barbies and other girly toys with my friend Cassie, whose family had their own personal track. Our families spent a lot of time together throughout my childhood. Even as I got older I still had no interest in learning how to ride. Hanging out with my friends seemed like more fun to me than getting all dirty. Eventually I changed my mind. Thirteen years later I finally decided I wanted to learn. I’m first going to learn how to ride a quad because I imagine it would be easier since it has four wheels. That seems safer to me than two.
During the hot summer of 2012, a few friends and I were planning to go on a little trip along the Oregon coast for one last little vacation together before my life has a big change. The month before we were leaving for our trip we were thinking of fun things we could do. Everyone was throwing out some ideas. We could go to Seaside, Cannon Beach, the Newport aquarium, a helicopter tour over the Seaside/Cannon Beach area, sea lion cave near Lincoln City, play golf on one of the many golf courses, and rent quads at the sand dunes in Florence. Everyone liked the idea of renting quads at the sand dunes. My friends have rented them before and they really wanted to do it again. They all said, “It’s not expensive and you’ll have a blast.” I thought it sounded like a great idea because afterall I finally wanted to ride a quad after all these years. I was excited and couldn’t wait for our trip. I just wasn’t sure it was a good idea for me to do it now because I was about 15 weeks pregnant.
Waiting for my next doctors appointment felt like a really long time. The days felt as if they were going by slower than usual. I could hardly wait to ask my doctor, a tall old man with gray hair, about whether or not I was allowed to ride a quad. When the day finally arrived I was excited for my appointment. Not only was I excited to hear my baby’s heartbeat and to find out how my baby was doing, but I was also excited to ask if I was allowed to ride a quad for the first time. When I finally asked my doctor he answered with, “I don’t recommend it if it’s your first time, but as long as you don’t go too fast over bumps, around corners, or don’t do anything crazy then it would be alright.” Hearing that he doesn’t recommend it made me a little upset. I had been excited for this moment for a while. Later that day when I saw my friends I told them the news. They knew how excited I had been so they tried cheering me up by thinking of other fun, safer things we could do. Eventually, my friend Ryan talked me into being excited again to rent quads because after all my doctor did say if I don’t go too fast or do anything dumb it would be okay. Ryan is the type of person who likes to take risks in life, so no wonder he was able to talk me into feeling comfortable with riding a quad while pregnant.
The day had finally arrived! The sun was shining and there were very few clouds in the sky. It’s time to learn how to ride a quad. As we were on our way to the sand dunes I was feeling extremely nervous. Hearing my doctor say he doesn’t recommend it was making me change my mind. I kept thinking to myself, “Do I really want to do this? Maybe I’ll just sit and wait while everyone else does it.” When we arrived at the rental place I told everyone I no longer wanted to do it. They were all trying their best to make me feel comfortable, even the workers were telling me it’d be okay and that it’s really easy especially since their quads you don’t have to shift to change gears. After a while I decided I would do it. A young lady with big curly brown hair and dirty jeans then helped us get everything we needed. My goggles felt really loose so I tried adjusting them but I was having a difficult time. My friend helped me and as she was putting them on she accidently let go and they smacked me in the eye. It hurt of course. It was now time to begin riding after the lady with dirty jeans went over the rules and explained everything to us. As we were going down the long bumpy three mile trail I was starting to wish I would have just stayed behind. I wasn’t comfortable. I kept giving it too much gas so I’d have to quickly press the brakes. I also didn’t like the way it felt when going around corners. When we got to the dunes out by the ocean I told everyone, “I’m worried. I don’t think this is a good idea.” They talked me into being comfortable with it. They said, “Go slow and only go where you feel safe.” There were huge random drop offs created by the wind at the top of some of the hills and if you weren’t careful you were going over and would be seriously hurt. Because of the big drop offs I only felt safe going in other peoples tracks. Once I felt comfortable with that I started going off where I wanted to go. I didn’t know you were only supposed to stop while facing down hill otherwise you’d get stuck. I had to have friends help me get unstuck a couple times. One of them said, “weren’t you listening to the lady when she was explaining everything?” I replied, “I was, but at the time I was so nervous I probably just forgot.” While wandering off on my own I also learned that if you go too slow by the water you’ll also get stuck. Once again my friends had something to say about that. After a while I finally felt comfortable with everything; the hills, turning, going by the water, and going faster.
After our two hours were up it was time to return the quads. I actually enjoyed the long bumpy trail ride back. I wasn’t scared like I was the first time we rode on it. When we returned the lady said to me, “You don’t look scared anymore. Did you have fun?” I told her how much I enjoyed it after I got comfortable. On the windy road back to the hotel I was telling everyone that I wanted to do it again. My friends were glad I didn’t stay behind. I’m also glad I didn’t. It was a fun experience.
Overall I learned that it’s okay to take risks and to step out of your comfort zone. If you think the activity might be bad for your health just ask someone, for instance in my case I asked my doctor. I will take more risks in life as long as I can get to the point to where I feel comfortable with what I am doing.

Narrative essay I liked most

I thought Malcolm X, Benjamin Franklin, and Mike Rose all had great narrative essays. All three of them did a good job at getting the point of their story across.
I think my favorite story was Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average.” I think he did a good job at describing the people in his story. I was able to visualize what his teachers and some of his classmates looked like. I was also able to now what some of the guys Mike Rose went to school with were like.
One of Mike Rose’s teachers that I was able to visualize was his Spanish teacher. Rose describes him as, “a tiny man, slight, five foot six at the most, soft spoken and delicate.” He also states, “He was as prepared for it (his rowdy class) as a doily maker at a hammer throw.” I imagine his teacher being a quiet man who isn’t very good at keeping his students on track or under control.
Mike Rose describes one of his classmates named Dave Snyder as, “a sprinter and halfback of true quality.” He also says, “he was welcome in any clique.” I get the image that Dave Snyder does track and is a popular guy who gets a long with everyone.

Difference between Malcolm X, Franklin's, and Rose's essays

Everyone has different stories, but people’s stories can also have some similarities with others. Malcolm X, Benjamin Franklin, and Mike Rose’s essays are all different from each other, but they also have one thing in common. All of their stories are narratives.
Malcolm X’s narrative is different from Benjamin Franklin and Mike Rose’s because he is telling the readers how he learned how to read. He told us how he learned by copying and studying the dictionary while he was in prison. He then told what kinds of stories he read and what he learned about the blacks being left out of history books and the horrible things about slavery.
Benjamin Franklin’s story is different from Malcolm X and Mike Rose’s because of the way people spoke back during his time. The language he uses is different from the language Malcolm X and Mike Rose used in their stories. The style of speaking they used is more of like how we speak today.
Lastly, Mike Rose’s story is different from Malcolm X and Benjamin Franklin’s because he actually describes people. He goes into a little bit of detail about most people he mentions. He describes what some of the guys look like so the reader can visualize what the guys are like.

Strategies for development

In the past, I have successfully used a couple of strategies for development. I have used argument and I have also used compare and contrast.
When I was a senior in high school, one of my assignments was to write an argumentative essay. I chose to write mine about abortion. In my paper I wrote about my beliefs on abortion and why I feel the way that I do. I also wrote a paragraph on why people might believe in the opposite of what I do. For both sides of the argument I researched some things online and added them into my paper. I have also written an argumentative essay about whether or not the drinking age should be lowered from 21 to 18. I argued that it should not be lowered and gave my reasoning for why I think that. I think argumentative essays can be fun to write as long as it is about something I strongly agree with.
I have also written a compare and contrast essay while in high school. I had to compare and contrast two characters in a book I read in English class. I remember I compared and contrasted the way they looked and the things that they did. I can’t remember what else I compared/contrasted about them because it was quite some time ago that I wrote the paper.

I Just Wanna Be Average

  1. To me it seemed like Mike Rose didn’t really enjoy being in vocational education. He would only halfway pay attention in class. Some of Mike Rose’s teachers were mean and abusive. They would hit their students. I have never had experience with teachers like these. I have had a teacher who would slam her marker down and yell at the class, but nothing abusive.
  2.
  3. High school is disorienting to students like Ken Harvey because people like to judge others and expect things to be a certain way. Students who encounter pressure and judgment in school can cope with it by simply ignoring it.
  4. This is my first year of college and I have not noticed anything disorienting about it yet. I think if a student is feeling disoriented they could talk with someone like an advisor/counselor.
  5. My experience of education compares to Mike Rose’s because when I was in junior high I didn’t like paying attention to my teachers. I would slack off in class and on my homework. Then I finally realized if I kept doing that once I got into high school I wouldn’t graduate on time with my friends because of my bad grades so I changed my attitude about school and starting paying attention.

Compare and Contrast

When I was first learning how to ride a quad I was nervous and scared. At the time I was about 15 weeks pregnant. Before I decided I would get on a quad for the first time I asked my doctor if it would be okay. My doctor told me, “I don’t recommend it but it would be alright as long as you don’t go too fast or do anything crazy.” With that being said it made me worry about learning how to ride a quad, but I was still wanting to try it out. So I did.
When I arrived to the place where I was going to first learn how to ride a quad, my mind was going crazy. I wasn’t sure it was a good idea since my doctor said he didn’t recommend it so I kept saying I didn’t want to do it afterall. Then I would change my mind because afterall he did say it was okay as long as I didn’t do anything dumb. Finally, after going back and forth on whether I was going to do it or not, I finally decided I would.
When we were all done my nerves had gone away. I was no longer scared or nervous. I was then really happy that I decided not to back out of learning how to ride a quad.

Prewriting

In the past, I have successfully used a few different prewriting techniques. When I was in junior high and high school my English teachers wanted us to use prewriting when we wrote essays. I remember some of the prewriting techniques I used were listing, clustering/branching, and free writing.
I remember using listing while writing some of my essays in junior high. It wasn’t my favorite type of prewriting, but one of my teachers liked us to practice using it. When I made lists for my essays I would just write down everything that came to mind that I thought I would be able to use somewhere in my essay.
Another prewriting technique I successfully used is clustering/branching. This style of prewriting use to be one of my favorites. It made writing my essays a little bit easier. I think this helped me with my essays because I was able to think of ideas for each paragraph and visually see where they would fit into my paper.
Lastly, I have also used free writing. When I was in high school one of my English teachers had us do free writing in journals every week. She would give us a topic and we had to write about it for a certain amount of time. I didn’t like having to write without being able to give it much thought first. I like to think about and plan out what I am going to write.

Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X

Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X’s essays are both similar and different for a couple of reasons.
Both Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X’s stories are narrative essays. Both of them tell us about how they enjoyed reading. Malcolm X would stay up all night long reading while in prison. When Benjamin Franklin was a child he would spend all the money he got on books. When he was older, he would spend his Sundays and his time before and after work reading and writing. Their essays are also similar because they tell us what they were able to accomplish. Malcolm X accomplished learning how to read by copying and studying the dictionary. While Benjamin Franklin accomplished becoming a better writer by comparing his old work with his new work.
Benjamin Franklin and Malcolm X’s stories are both written differently. The way Benjamin Franklin was speaking in his story is different from the way we speak today. Malcolm X’s piece of writing sounded more like how we speak today. Benjamin Franklin’s story was also different because he wrote about more than one topic. Malcolm X mostly just wrote about reading while Benjamin wrote about reading and writing. Also, Benjamin Franklin told us a little bit about the different jobs he worked. Like how he was employed in his fathers business and helped one of his brother with his business.

Malcolm X

I have never knew much about Malcolm X. Reading the “Learning to Read” expert from The Autobiography of Malcolm X has helped me learn a little bit more about him. I think it is astonishing that while Malcolm was in prison he wanted to learn how to read so he taught himself. I think it would take a lot of motivation to copy and study the entire dictionary.
I believe Malcolm X did a great job at describing how he learned to read. One thing I like is that he told the reason for why he wanted to learn to read before he told us how he learned. I also think he did a good job at telling us what he did after he learned Like how he would check out books from the prison library and read them all night long even after the lights would turn off.
Malcolm X’s “Learning to Read” relates to the first unit because it is a narrative that he wrote about himself. It also relates because it is about him telling us how he learned how to do something new.

"How I learned to program computers"

Reading Ferros story “How I learned to program computers” will be helpful for me to write my first paper assignment in a couple ways. His story will help because it showed me that narratives are written about one event. This story also helps with language usage.
I have never really read a narrative paper on how someone learned how to do something before so Ferros story about how he learned how to program computers showed me what kinds of things are in one. I learned that they are about one thing and you write about everything that helped you accomplish what you were learning. For example, like how he wrote about the age he made his first webpage, all the programming books he has to read, some of the classes he has to take at Stanford, and in between all of that the different web pages he made helped get him to where he is today with all the knowledge he has about making web pages.
Ferros story also can help me with ideas for usage of language. If the paper is about you then you can use the word “I” which you usually don’t get to do. Although, you don’t want to overuse the word.

Education in America

Getting an education is important for everyone. Without getting an education you wont get a good paying job such as being a lawyer, a teacher, or anything in the medical field. In my opinion, education in America needs to improve. I believe education is failing because of the way teachers are teaching, schooling is test based, the cost of going to a university is too expensive for many families, and students feel more pressure socially.

The way teachers teach have an effect on their students learning. Each teacher has a different style of teaching. They don’t teach for all students to understand. Some students are able to learn just by listening while others are visual learners. I think if all teachers did both ways of teaching, more students  would learn more because they would pay more attention and actually be able to understand what is being taught. Also, some classes have too many students for one teacher. If the class size is smaller, the teacher has more of a chance to work one on one with their students. They would also be able to help them more with their learning needs.

A students education is based off of a state test. The tests do not take into consideration the learning differences and abilities. For example, not everyone is at the same math level when it is time to take the math portion of the state test, but they all have to take the same test anyway. I don’t think it is fair that someone who isn’t so great at math and is in a low math class in high school has to take the same math test as someone who is a lot better at it. I think there should be different tests for each math level.

Going to a university is really expensive especially if you want to go to one out of state. There are many different things you have to pay for. If you’re going out of state you have to pay for the out of state tuition, you also have to pay for text books, dorm, and many students have a meal plan. A lot of families can’t afford to pay for it all. Financial aid is one good thing our country has. Financial aid helps pay for some of the expenses but not all. I think if it didn’t cost so much, more people would go on to further their education after high school.

Students feel like they need to socially fit in with everyone else. All schools have all the different kinds of cliques. People think if they don’t have nice things or do some of the things others do that they wont fit in. I think some people worry too much about fitting in with everyone else and don’t focus enough on learning. I also think people enjoy texting and talking with their friends during class more than paying attention which is why some students fall behind in class or do bad on assignments.

Education in America is doing poorly for many reasons. Some students are unable to pay attention and learn because of the way their teacher is teaching. Not all students have the same amount of knowledge causing them to fail the standardized state testing. There are people who don’t make enough money to pay for college and they don’t get enough help from financial aid. Also, some students care more about going to school to socialize with their friends than to pay attention and learn. There are many students who drop out of school causing them to be unemployed or having low paying jobs. I think the education here needs improvement.
